WSOJ Sock Hop and 50 Year Celebration
Well, it's getting close ... time for our 1950's Sock Hop and 50 year celebration party for Starlight Shrine #1 on Oct. 17th beginning at 1:00 p.m. This is going to be a fun, fun event that you and your family and friends won't want to miss!
If you need tickets to buy or sell, please contact Soj. Stacie Schwartz or me. Or, please let one of us know that you'll be purchasing your ticket(s) at the door so we can firm up our food and beverage head count.
Starlight Shrine #1 members, please make sure that Soj. Jean Castro knows what side dish (rolls & butter, salad & dressing, or dessert) you are bringing. I am taking care of preparing the main pasta and vegetable dish and have already obtained the items needed for the no-host non-alcholic bar drinks (please note-a limited selection will be available, this will not be a complete "bar").
Decorating and set up will begin about 11 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 17th, in case you are able to come early and help out. Our celebration decorations are multi-colored helium filled balloons-themed with white table coverings and black plates that are intended to simulate LP records.
Soj. Wanieta is bringing her keyboard, amplifier and speaker system and will be ready to play 1950's music for our listening and dancing enjoyment.
And, of course, a clean-up crew is needed to help Soj. Jean and Soj. John after the event.
Okay! So, get those 1950's Sock Hop outfits ready (or comfortable casual clothes) and we'll see you next Sunday!

Subject: Services for Charlene Curtis
It is regret that I inform you that Charlene Curtis, PWHP of Trinity Shrine, entered into rest on Sept. 15, after a lengthy illness. Services will be held on Monday, October 11, at 11:00 AM at the St. James Episcopal Church, 3903 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90010. Interment will be within the church.
Paul took a fall last month and was in the hospital a week and then to rehab for about three weeks. He was in Eugene at Sacred Heart River Bend Hospital where surgery was done and then to South Hills Rehab. He had a compound fracture in the lower lumber No. 2. Had very serve pain and still is having pain and not strong enough to walk more than 150 feet with the walker. He is not doing well enough to come home. Will wait to see about making the ramp and etc. at home for him. I have been checking out all the assisted living and foster homes. Wow, what a job. He must be moved soon. I have finally arranged a place in Roseburg, Oregon that is about 35 miles from Elkton. The close one in Sutherlin 27 miles was full and had a waiting list also check out places in Cottage Grove. (Eugene was 55 miles one way every day.) I stayed at my friend Jackie's home while Paul was in the hospital as she was only 6 miles from the hospital.
Please relay this to others as he has enjoyed the many cards and prayers he has received.
Love and hugs to all,

I just found out last night that Paul Straight has been under rehab for several weeks. Three weeks ago Paul fell while at home. It was not necessary for him to go for medical care at that time, however, Florence had to call 911 to help her get him up. Then the next day he fell again and again Florence had to call 911. This time however, he had to go to the hospital. He suffered a Compound Fracture of the lumbar area which required surgery. He is in Rehab at the present and will be released soon. Before Paul can come home Florence needs to make several adjustments such as tear out the bath tub to install a shower and to also install a ramp.He is still in a wheelchair and can only walk very short distances with the assistance of a walker and nurse, etc. He will require further therapy at home. Then to complicate matters Paul is also suffering from Gout. Both Florence and Paul could use your prayers. Cards and words of cheer always feed ther soul.

July 2010 Birthdays and other news
Happy 4th of July!
Please join in saying "Happy Birthday" (and many, many more) to our Starlight Shrine #1 Sojourners who will celebrate their birthdays in the month of July:
Kathy Bruck on 7/6
Romona Davis on 7/20
Nadine Gilberg on 7/31
Wanieta Iness on 7/29
Wendy Jackson on 7/21
Faun Crane Olsen on 7/24
If you have a birthday in the month of July and are not listed above, please contact me to update the information. Thank you.
Concern: Please keep our Soj. Fran Ruszkai, WHP, in prayer for speedy recovery from her recent hospitalization. (As I have been out of town for the past couple of weeks, she is the only one whom I am currently aware of from our Shrine that needs our extra prayers. Please contact me if there are others.)
Joy: Soj. Roger Noyes will be at the assisted living facility in Tualatin, OR until the end of this month and then he is going back home to Bandon to stay in Bandon. Yeah!!!
Also, please remember to be saving the date for our annual fund raising event that will be held on Saturday, August 7, 2010. This year's theme is a 50's style sock hop as Starlight Shrine #1 celebrates it's 50th year. Tentative plans include having the event start about noonish with the cost at the door to be $5.00 per person for ages 12 & above. Under 12 to be $1.00 per person, with those ages 2 years old and under admitted without cost. Plan on bringing your family and friends for this fun event that will feature a dance demonstration. There will a chance for everyone who wants to dance to get out on the floor (and compete for funny and/or silly prizes--bring or wear your best 50s sock hop outfit!) Icy cold lemonade and peppermint iced sun tea, along with light and cool snacks will be served since the temperatures are so high at this time of the year. Please help pass the word about our event to your friends in other organizations. If you know you are planning on attending, please contact me so the committee will have a rough head count for food and beverages. Thank you.

Hi Carolyn,
This is Evelyn Blakemore's daughter. Evelyn fell and broke her hip on June 17. She's had surgery and spent a week in the hospital, due to some complications. Saturday she was moved to a rehab facility, and will probably be there for almost three weeks. They expect a total recovery, but will need some help at home for awhile.

I don't know how much longer we will hold out. In case you haven't heard George is on Chemo as he has esophageal cancer and it may be in his stomach too. And, Miriam is moving to Rancho Bernardo to be near her son. She expects to be gone by September or October.
It seems so sad but that's the way the ball bounced.

Notes with Joys and Concerns 07Jun10
Save the date!! Starlight Shrine's annual fund raising event will be held on Saturday, August 7, 2010. As our Shrine celebrates its 50th year, this year's theme will be a "1950's Sock Hop". More details will be forthcoming as plans are firmed up. However, I have been in communication with a friend I know who dances and he has agreed to help with getting a couple of couples together for a swing dance demonstration. So, dig out those poodle skirts and bobby socks, tell your family and friends about it, and get ready to have some fun!!
Soj. Paula Phillips will be celebrating her 80th birthday on August 7th! (Watch here in the blog for the July and August birthday list as the dates draw nearer.)
Congratulations to these Sojourners who were installed into their offices this past Saturday: Soj. Monie Mendoza, PWHP, as Third Handmaid; Soj. Elizabeth Hannon as Worthy Treasurer; and Soj. Kit Trochtenberg as Worthy Guardian.
Soj. Paula Phillips missed the meeting Saturday due to throwing her back out while carrying luggage through the airport because she and Soj. Fran were unable to take the luggage cart past the security checkpoint. Please pray for her speedy recovery.
Soj. Connie Arrowsmith is home recuperating from the blood clot in her leg and resting in order to be able to have a long awaited eye appointment and for fitting with special contact lenses to improve her visual impairment. Please pray for her healing and success of her eye treatment.
It was reported Saturday that Soj. Maggie Cottle is settling into her new living arrangements, but she would like to have contact by the members, as she is a bit lonely. She has an apartment there and is living "independently"."
Soj. Chris DiGuilio continues to recuperate from her surgeries. Soj. Sharene Parini and Soj. Dale Iness were both absent from the meeting due to health reasons. Please keep these Sojourners in prayer for their recoveries.
Soj. Shirley Davis and Soj. Monie Mendoza continue to recover their health and it was good to see them both at the meeting on Saturday! Soj. Monie says that the good news is that she does not have to have carpel tunnel surgery on her arm as the pain in her wrist is from the shoulder surgery and it will take longer to recover than she initially was lead to believe. Her anticipated recovery time will be 8 to 12 months instead. She continues with physical therapy for a couple more months and then she may be able to drive again at that time. Soj. LaVerne Willman has been absolutely wonderful in helping drive Soj. Monie to all of her doctor appointments. Soj. Shirley has also been wonderful in helping Soj. Monie by taking her to grocery store, etc.
Soj. Roger Noyes is improving and his surgeons are optimistic that they can "put him back together again", hopefully sometime in September or October. He is getting stronger and he's able to be at home for longer periods of time each time he leaves the assisted living facility.
Soj. Wendy Jackson will be in the Southern Nevada area for a visit soon. She will be combining her & her husband's vacationing with house sitting for me (Soj. Pam Noyes) while Tim and I go to upstate New York so I can meet his family and we can see the two new granddaughters who were born recently.

Soj. Yvonne Lee was robbed, shot and killed on Wednesday, February 3, 2010.
She was taking one of her co-workers home from work. She was the Assistant Director of Shreverport Green which hires at-risk teenagers to help them get back on the right road to becoming productive citizens rather than a burden to the community. Soj. Yvonne was a very sweet, well-liked person who never had anything bad to say about others. She went out of her way to help whenever she could.
Soj. Yvonne had just recently became a member of Hebron Shrine #6 in Shreveport, and was starting to become very active in our Shrine. She filled in wherever we needed her, and was trying to learn more about our work. Soj. Yvonne was loved by all and will be sorely missed.

Feb 2010 Meeting Reminder with Birthday and Joys and Concerns
For all Starlight Shrine #1 members (and other Shrine members who may want to visit), our regularly scheduled meeting will be this upcoming Saturday, February 6, 2010, beginning at 3:00 p.m. This is our "Sweetheart" themed meeting and we will be presenting our Miriam and Continuous Service Awards at the dinner following the meeting.
Please join me in saying "Happy Birthday" to our member whose birthday is in February:
Soj. Terry Thompson - Feb. 6th
Concern:
We have an urgent, urgent prayer request for Soj. Dorothy Jahnke, who was hospitalized in Centennial Hills Hospital with congestive heart failure. This is our Worthy Shepherdess Soj. Sharene Parini's mom.
Joys:
Tim and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary, along with attending Sophia's first birthday party, yesterday. Can you believe it's been a whole year gone by already?? It seems like it was just a few days ago.
Below are more concerns that have been forwarded to us. Please keep these Sojourners and their families in your prayers, too.
See you Saturday!
